April 9, 1939 - April 25, 2021
Ken passed away suddenly at his home in Nanaimo, BC where he lived for the past 16 years with his wife of 60 years, Joy (nee Jones). He leaves behind his children, daughters Gay and Jane, son David and very special grandson, Ryan.
Ken recently celebrated his 82nd birthday with his family on Zoom. His sister Kathy predeceased him in 2019 and he leaves behind brothers, Larry and Keith and all of their families, whom he loved very much.
Family was very important to Ken, and he remained in touch with many of his cousins and other relatives over the years. Ken made everyone else feel as if they were family.
Ken was born in McKay, Alberta and moved to BC with his parents George and Ellen, and his brother Larry when he was two years old. They lived in Wells, Port Coquitlam and Great Central Lake. Ken was proud to be a logger, and worked in the woods for 40 years.
He started his logging career at M&B Sproat Lake Division, Port Alberni, BC and retired from Port McNeill Division in 1994. Ken and Joy lived in Port Hardy for 38 years where they worked hard, raised their family, and were very involved in the community.
Ken was a very social person, loved to laugh and tell stories, and made many friends through his love of playing, coaching and watching sports in particularly softball, curling, darts, and bowling.
Ken enjoyed a cold beer, and his family asked that until it is safe to gather together to celebrate Ken's life that you raise a glass, tell a story, watch a game and have a good laugh.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the first responders who came to the house, and treated both Ken and Joy with dignity, respect and caring. The family also wishes to thank their friends and neighbours who supported Joy in the first couple of days, before family members were able to arrive, and who continue to provide friendship and caring, and are so willing to help.
They also wish to extend a huge thank you to all the friends and family for all of the cards, flowers, phone calls, texts and emails that have flooded in.
Ken was a very caring, sensitive man, and felt strongly about helping others. The family asks that if you are compelled to make a donation to a charity of your choice in his name that would be greatly appreciated.
