Mabel, passed away at NRGH (with her family by her side) at age 90 years after a lengthy battle with heart/lung disease and diabetes. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Leslie(Tom) Buchanan, on July 13, 1996. Mabel has left to mourn her passing only child, William(Bill) Preston Buchanan (Dorothy) of Coombs, BC. Granddaughter: Kim Vanessa Buchanan(Richard Poulin) of Victoria, BC. Grandson: Todd Preston Buchanan (Danielle) of Victoria, BC. Grandson: Darren Thomas Buchanan of Coombs, BC. Great grandchildren, Leif, Lily, Finnley and Sophie. Also, foster children Gary and Karen Collinge. In lieu of flowers, donations to Post Secondary Scholarships in nursing and trades in Mabel and Tommy’s names may be made c/o Rodway & Perry, In Trust, 1-699 Beach Road, Qualicum Beach, BC. Alternatively, donations may be made to the Nanaimo and District branch of the Canadian Diabetes Society, 255–2000 Island Highway North, Nanaimo, BC V9S 5W3. An informal, joint celebration of life for Mabel and Tommy will be held for family and friends at the family home in Coombs, on July 16th from 3–5 p.m. Our thanks to the staff at NRGH, The Gardens, Dufferin Place, and especially, Dr Edwards, Dr Wagenaar, Dr. Carriage, Marie King. Mabel grew up in Vancouver and moved with her husband Tommy to Port Alberni where Bill grew up. Tommy worked at the Somas Division of McMillan Bloedel and Mabel as a bookkeeper. They enjoyed summers camping at the reserve on the Big Qualicum, playing crib and fishing. In the late 60’s made a permanent move to Qualicum Beach and built their home “Oceanside”on the oceanfront. Widowed, Mabel moved to Parksville in 2003 where she made many new friends. Mabel was active in many volunteer and animal groups, enjoyed knitting and an avid BC Lions and Canucks fan. First Memorial Society of BC, Nanaimo, in charge of arrangements.
