NEWTON (Maans), Margit –

Mom went to sleep peacefully at Nanaimo Srs. Village with her family by her side after a short battle with old age. Born in Finland 1914, married Harry Maans and immigrated to Canada in 1951 with her husband and small child. Lived in Port Alberni where Harry was a carpenter. The family was actively involved in the Finn-Swede community. Many wonderful memories of days spent at Sprout Lake during the summers and camping in Parksville on the beach. Later moving to Burnaby where she was a long standing member of the Order of Runeburg. Margit was an exceptional cook, homemaker, sewer and knitter. She loved bowling almost as much as her lifelong joy of dancing. After Dad’s passing she found the 2nd love of her life and married Jim Newton(of England and Africa) in 1991 with whom she traveled extensively to Finland, England to visit Jim’s family, many trips to the U.S. as well as several enjoyable voyages up to Alaska. Mom and Jim moved from their Coquitlam condo to Nanaimo Seniors Village in 2005.

Predeceased by her husband Harry in 1986 as well as 5 brothers and sisters including her twin Sonja, step daughter Denise in Birmingham, England, step-son Roger (Lois) Pitt Meadows. B.C., her youngest sister Marianne (Wolmar) Nyholm in Finland, niece Ruth Clark in Vancouver and niece Sonja (George) Sim in Port Alberni, B.C. and the special grandpuppies Mikko and Ben. Many thanks to the remarkable aids and nurses at Nanaimo Seniors Village extended care for their exceptional care of Mom during her final months.
