February 14, 1929 - April 6, 2021
Marion (Peggy) Hess passed away on April 6th, 2021, at the age of 92. Peggy leaves four daughters: Aveleigh, Sheridan (Rudy), Tierney (Scott), and Darien (Norm), 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, cousin Mary and family, nine nieces and nephews, and 10 great-nieces and nephews.
Peggy was born Feb 14, 1929 and lived most of her life at Sproat Lake. She worked as a teacher and librarian for School District 70 until her retirement at age 55, and then she was a writer, photographer, traveler, gardener, slug salter and life-long student.
One of her favorite projects was co-writing and publishing 'Sproat Lake Reflections' as a member of the Sproat Lake History Book Committee in 2008.
Peggy never lost her sense of adventure and, after retirement, enjoyed exploring new places, whether it be on another continent or in her own backyard. She toured South America and hiked the West Coast Trail, visited Belize, Scotland, Mexico, and celebrated her 70th birthday with a month in South Africa. On her 79th birthday she put on a wetsuit to try surfing at Long Beach.
Her happiest place was working in her garden where you would find her most days of the year, pleased to share her knowledge and plants with friends and family. Winter months would find her reading and looking out at "her" lake, while planning for the next gardening season.
When visiting Peggy at the lake you were guaranteed a warm welcome, a cup of tea or glass of wine, jelly beans, a list of things that needed fixing, a request to get the mail, the computer was usually 'acting up', the pliers were on the counter as knobs were never replaced, and she always, always expressed her gratitude and appreciation for her visitors.
Peggy spent the past two years at Echo Village and felt safe and cared for by the thoughtful, compassionate staff there. We are very grateful for this and for the kindness shown to us during Mom's passing.
