Matija "Mat" Sumen

In loving memory ~
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Matija "Mat" Sumen. He was a husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and great grandfather.
Dad died peacefully at West Coast General Hospital on Tuersday, July 5, 2022 after a short battle with cancer at the age of 80.
Dad was predeceased by his parents Steve and Matilida, his older brother Steve, brother in law Carlo D'arsie and son in law Wayne MacDonald.
He is survived by his wife Olga of 58 years; his children - daughter Irena Larochelle, son Matt (Jill) Sumen; grandchildren Brandon (Brandy), Shelby, Ryan, Erika; great grandchildren Kash and Miesha; sisters Teresa (Joe) Peterec and youngest sibling Olga D'Arsie; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Dad brought his wife and daughter to Canada in 1969 to start a new life and be closer to his siblings from Dolnija Bistrica, Slovenia. He got a job at the Somass Mill and stayed there until his retirement.
In his younger years Dad spent 2 years in the army. Once he came to Canada he loved to hunt and fish - especially moose hunting with his brother-in-law.
A Celebration of Mat's life will be held 1:00pm - 3:00pm, Saturday, July 23, 2022 at 2246 Hamilton Drive.
The family would like to thank Dr. White and the nurses that showed the family compassion and understanding during Mat's final days.
