December 24, 1933 - October 20, 2022
In loving memory ~
With great sadness, we announce the passing of Ross James McLean on October 20, 2022 at the age of 88. In addition to his parents, William and Mary McLean, he was predeceased by his daughter (Carol) and sister (Jean Higgins). Ross is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Wanda (née Kirkpatrick), sons Lawrence (Karen), Gary (Lisa), and two grandsons James and Evan. He will also be missed by all the members of the Kirkpatrick and Higgins' clans and by many numerous friends and acquaintances.
Ross was born in Duncan on December 24, 1933 and grew up in Port Alberni. In 1954 Ross started working at Alberni Plywoods where later on he met Wanda. He left the Plywoods to start working and contracting in the piping trades in the Alberni Valley, in particular Valley Rockgas.
When Ross finally retired from a varied and fulfilling career, he continued to learn new things and mentor others. He could be found fussing with his boats, motor home, and Model T Ford in his workshop. He also enjoyed a morning coffee with Wanda down at the river. He volunteered his time and expertise at the Jake Leyenaar Hatchery. Being at the fish hatchery with his good friends was Ross's favourite pastime. Gardening became a recent passion and a bountiful harvest was enjoyed as he had the best garden ever, this past year.
Ross will be remembered for making the world a better place, for his interest in local and world history and also for the natural world. He was well-known for making conversations with strangers. His long and joyful life spoke of his commitment to family, work, learning, community and the environment.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ross's memory can be made to:
