McKenzie, Ruth Ione
January 20, 1923 ~ April 21, 2011
Ruth passed away peacefully with family by her side at Echo Village on Thursday, April 28th, 2011 at the age of 88. The eldest daughter of Herman and Mabel
Maedel, Ruth was born in Saskatchewan and was 13 when her family moved to Port Alberni. After completing her nursing degree, Ruth worked at the West Coast General Hospital and before retiring, spent several years as the night supervisor.
She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Wilfred; daughter Trudee, son Greg (Cheryl),
foster daughter Linda; grandchildren: Braidan, Brett
(Elizabeth), Alyshea, Amanda, James and first great grandchild Sophia. As well, Ruth is survived by
sisters: Audrey, Dianne (John); brothers: Myron (Helen), Neil (Gloria), Verne (Margaret), Jerry(Jenette);
sisters-in-law: Lika, Donna and Marjorie and many nieces and nephews.
Above all, Ruth enjoyed people. She loved attending social events and will be remembered as a classy lady who loved clothes! She spent many happy days with friends and family at the summer place on Sproat Lake. Family and friends also enjoyed many skiing adventures together. Ruth was quite crafty and loved knitting and sewing. Helping her community was very important to Ruth. Over the years she was involved in many different organizations but her two passions were volunteering for the Hospital and Legion’s Ladies Auxiliaries.
Ruth will be remembered as a very loyal and loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, auntie and friend. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00pm Monday, May 9, 2011 from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 293, 4680 Victoria Quay, Port Alberni, BC.

The family is very grateful to all the workers at Echo Village who gave Ruth such wonderful care and compassion during her years there.
