Ruth Marie Johnson

Ruth Marie Johnson

May 10, 1938 – Nov 14, 2017
Ruth Marie Johnson passed away peacefully on November 14, 2017 at Nanaimo General Hospital.

Ruth was predeceased by her father John Kolbuck, mother Nellie Shalley, husband Gib, brother Ted (sister-in-law Violet).

She is survived by her daughter Charmaine, brother William (Pat), Vince (Gina), Stacey (Rob), Sister Eileen (Rudy), Kerry, Sean, (Ted and Violet’s children, Mitch (Terry), Alison (Colin) and numerous nieces and nephews.

Born in Selkirk, Manitoba May 10, 1938, Ruth had a zest for life and a twinkle in her eye. Gib and Ruth married in Winnipeg and moved to Port Alberni in 1967. She worked many years at Port Shipping, then changed careers and started at MacDermott’s.

She was with them for 14 Years starting in 1988-2002 where she was a great source of daily excitement and entertainment. Her passion for flowers and gardening was apparent, as all you had to do was visit their home where her garden thrived in colour and abundance.

Her generosity will greatly be missed by all those who sampled her perogies, pickles and beets. Her love for all her dogs over the years was second to none, she always had room for on more and never said no if a 4-legged friend needed a place to stay for the weekend.

Ruth’s daughter Charmaine was the shinning star in her life and she was so very proud of her. Ruth cherished her travels with her daughter and all the adventures they had (which were many). There are no words to express how much Charmaine and their dog Sassy will miss her.

Rest in Peace from all your friends and family. A Graveside Service will be held a later date.

If friends so wish, donations may be made in Ruth’s memory to the BC SPCA Alberni Clayoquat Branch, 4936 Braughton Street, Port Alberni, BC, V9Y 8R6 or online at and follow the links to the Port Alberni Clayoquat Branch.
