It is with profound sadness that we, the family, of Waltraud Hafemann, our beautiful Mom, Oma, and Oma Schatz passed away on Dec. 2, 2016 after a brief residency at the Arrowsmith Lodge in Parksville. She was 82 years old, and was a resident of Port Alberni for more than 60 years.
Waltraud was born on Sept. 5, 1934 to her late parents Hermann and Anne Szillinski. She was predeceased by her loving husband Bruno on Jan. 5, 2008. She was also predeceased by brother Helmut, sister Annelise, her nephew Fabian, mother-in-law Emilie Hafemann, sister in-law Wanda and brothers-in-law Gerhard and Arthur, all in Germany.
?Waltraud is survived by her loving children, daughter Sylvia Shanks and son Ron Hafemann (Kelowna). Oma leaves to mourn her devoted and heartbroken grandchildren Nicole (Troy) Startup, and Kyle Shanks (Maple Ridge). Oma Schatz was adored and is sadly missed by her great-grandchildren, Kole and Kaia Startup.
Waltraud is also survived and deeply missed by her sisters, Helga Schmidt and family, and Rosemarie Hirsh and family, and her brother Horst Szillinski, sisters-in-law, Ella Engel and family, and Lydia Seitner, all living in Germany.
?Thank you to Dr. D. White, Dr. Ean Smit, Dr. Sulz (Parksville), and all of her health care team and support staff who took care of Waltraud with compassion and humour. Our thanks to Waltraud’s lifelong friends who visited her often in W.C.G.H. and at Arrowsmith Lodge. She knew that all of you loved her. Waltraud’s wishes were that there would be no service. Cremation has taken place.
