He shared a special bond with his late twin brother Richard (Dick) and was one of eight Thatcher children. The family spent their early years on Mount Arrowsmith before relocating to Coombs and Nanoose Bay, where Bill's childhood was filled with adventures and fond memories. He was the last surviving member of his generation in the Thatcher family.

Bill attended school in Cumberland and later embarked on a dedicated career in the logging industry, where he worked tirelessly until his retirement. His love for the outdoors was evident in his passions for camping, traveling, bowling, golfing, fishing, and hunting.

A devout member of his church community, Bill found great joy in his fellowship with friends and contributed in many ways, including mowing the church lawn and performing minor repairs. His Wednesday gatherings with church friends were a highlight of his week, reflecting his deep faith and commitment to helping others.

Bill was a man of simple pleasures, with a particular fondness for McDonald's cheeseburgers and coffee. He also enjoyed visiting Victoria Quay, where he loved watching the bears, an activity that brought him much peace and happiness.
