William "Bill" Thatcher, born on June 27, 1935, in Port Alberni, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2024.
He shared a special bond with his late twin brother Richard (Dick) and was one of eight Thatcher children. The family spent their early years on Mount Arrowsmith before relocating to Coombs and Nanoose Bay, where Bill's childhood was filled with adventures and fond memories. He was the last surviving member of his generation in the Thatcher family.
Bill attended school in Cumberland and later embarked on a dedicated career in the logging industry, where he worked tirelessly until his retirement. Known for his warm heart and gentle spirit, Bill was a man who embraced life with enthusiasm. His love for the outdoors was evident in his passions for camping, traveling, bowling, golfing, fishing, and hunting.
A devout member of his church community, Bill found great joy in his fellowship with friends and contributed in many ways, including mowing the church lawn and performing minor repairs. His Wednesday gatherings with church friends were a highlight of his week, reflecting his deep faith and commitment to helping others.
Bill was a man of simple pleasures, with a particular fondness for McDonald's cheeseburgers and coffee. He also enjoyed visiting Victoria Quay, where he loved watching the bears, an activity that brought him much peace and happiness.
Many people held a special place in his heart and brought him immense joy and pride. Bill's love for his family was unwavering, and his legacy of kindness and compassion will continue to inspire those who knew him.
Bill is survived by his loving daughters, Janice Kendrick and her husband Greg, and Suzanne Horsley and her husband Robert. He was a proud grandfather to Christopher Weening, Jennifer Briand, and Ryan Horsley, and a great-grandfather to Mycah Weening. He also leaves behind several step-grandchildren who were dear to him.
Bill Thatcher's life was a testament to the values of hard work, faith, and love. His generosity and warmth will be deeply missed and his memory will live on through the many lives he impacted.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Bill at 11:00 am on Friday, June 7th at Chapel of Memories Funeral home.
