Councillor’s moral compass has gone adrift

To the Editor,

Re: Councillor caught using fake profile, AV News, July 11.

The long dark shadow of former Port Alberni Mayor “Tall” Paul Reitsma still lurks the chambers of City Hall. Reitsma went on to become an MLA for Parksville Qualicum and wrote letters to the editor praising himself under the alias “Warren Betanko.” Once discovered, he was expelled from the Liberal caucus and then faced a recall campaign organized by angry and disappointed electors. He correctly made the principled decision and resigned his seat before the recall vote was counted.

Now in city hall, we have a councillor who, once banned from a Facebook social media account, re-entered the same Facebook site under the assumed name of “Ronald Richard Hastings” to praise himself and another councillor.

There is little, if any, difference between a self praise letter to the editor and a self praise entry to a social media site under assumed names.

Councillor Chris Alemany’s moral compass has gone adrift. He should do the principled and honourable thing and resign his seat before he is kicked out of office in the October civic election.

Bob Kanngiesser,

Port Alberni
