To the Editor,
Re: "Condition of Highway 4 is 'reprehensible'" (Letters, July 3, 2024)
I am writing to say I agree with Ernie Burnett’s letter saying that the condition of Highway 4 is "reprehensible."
In my opinion, the road does not meet highway standards, is not acceptable and is dangerous — given that it is the only road for people commuting and travelling to, from and through the Alberni Valley and the West Coast.
Further, are the banks of the Cameron Lake bluffs secure where the fire was? When travelling out of the Valley, I am unsure if we will be able to return home that day.
In the recent past, the lines on the road have been left to fade, making the road especially dangerous during the winter and rainy months.
Simply put, I would like to see the Port Alberni municipal government and Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District continue to advocate with the provincial and federal governments to upkeep and invest in a reliable and safe highway into the Alberni Valley.
