To the Editor,
With all the pedestrians being hit in crosswalks in the City of Port Alberni, one of the ways that sight lines could be improved on Johnston Road would be to remove some of the parking spaces.
Heading east on Johnston, at Margaret, Gertrude, Elizabeth, and Adelaide Streets, there is a parking spot only a few feet from the crosswalk.
When vehicles are parked in these spots, drivers going up Johnston cannot see pedestrians waiting to cross until they are right up to the crosswalk. At the speed that people drive, there is no hope of stopping in time.
Each of these parking spots could be removed, allowing drivers to see someone waiting to cross.
I don’t think putting signal lights at each crosswalk is practical, such as the one at Helen Street, but removing these spots would at least allow drivers to see someone waiting to cross.
