Re: RCMP crime unit sees success, AV News, April 27.
I was shocked to read this quote from RCMP Insp. Brian Hunter in the April 27 issue regarding crime in Port Alberni: “Mental illness alone, dealing with these folks, they often get into crime as well.”
Although some addictions are rooted in mental illness and some addicts commit crimes, I think advocates for the mentally ill and anyone dealing with this themselves or in their family will find this direct link between mental illness and criminal behaviour misleading and dangerous. This is clearly a case of think before you speak.
