The stands were packed as a 40-year tradition of logger sports at the Alberni District Fall Fair continued on Sept. 10, 2023.
The stands were filled with onlookers who cheered on the talented men and women as they competed in “Jack and Jill” events, log chopping, bucking and log birling.
There was a group of young people that came from the University of B.C. and as longtime emcee of the event Alan Boyko said, it was great to see the next generation taking on this sport.
The Top Logger of the day went to Nick Hall from Squamish, Top Lady went to Anita Jezowski of Nanaimo and Top Novice went to Kenji Boyko—a multi-generational winner from Port Alberni.
Assisting with the emcee duties was Keith Gagnon of the Kinsmen Club. There were also numerous volunteers doing the timing and cleaning up the aftermath of the loggers’ cuts and saws.
