A Frances Kelsey player (wearing green) is double teamed by two Alberni Armada players in a senior girls league game on Tuesday.

Consistent effort and establishing an up tempo style marked the first tourney of the year for the Alberni District Secondary School Armada senior girls basketball team.

The Armada played at a tournament at Woodlands School in Nanaimo where the went 3-1 and took third place in the 12 team tourney. “The girls played hard and proved that they are a deep team,” head coach Al Seredick said.

The team scored victories over GP Vanier and NDSS before running into old foe in Dover Bay. The Armada were up by at least seven points at the half. But a combination of a smothering Dover Bay press defense and foul calls took the wind out of the Armada’s sails. “We didn’t handle the pressure, but to be fair to Dover they pressed well,” Seredick said.

Armada players Laurissa Jimmy, Nicole Irg, and Julia Hudson earned players of the games honours. “We’ve got a deep roster though and everyone has the ability to make a contribution this season,” he said.

The Armada is athletic, Seredick said, so he is developing an up-tempo transition offense and a man-to-man defense.

The team played a league game against Frances Kelsey Tuesday and is playing at Ballenas Secondary this weekend.

Free throws... It’s a new season and new surroundings for a former Armada hoops player. Danielle Lessard who graduated from ADSS last June. Lessard plays for Victoria’s Camosun College Chargers womens team this season. She scored 13 points and had two rebounds in a 77-35 win over the Columbia Bible College Bearcats last weekend.
