The Port Alberni Athletics U15 Girls soccer team have begun their defence as champions of Vancouver Island.

The team is mostly the same in terms of players and coaches, with a couple of additions to the roster to offset a couple of departures from last season. The girls started practice in late August and worked hard through the early part of the season.

Their first game was on Sept. 25, and saw them beat Nanaimo 3-0. On Oct. 2, Comox visited Port Alberni and the Athletics won 2-1. During a stormy weekend on Oct. 16, the team travelled to Powell River and won 2-0. On Oct. 23, Campbell River played at the ADSS field, and once again the Athletics won, this time 1-0.

On Oct. 30, Nanaimo again came to Port Alberni, and despite the Athletics carrying the majority of play, the game ended 0-0.

“The Athletics play a strong defensive game that seems to frustrate their opponents, all the while relying on some opportunistic scoring,” coach Shaun Rust said.

GOAL POSTS...The team would again like to thank Re/Max, Mountain View Bakery, and Coulson’s for their support.
