BCHL: Scary moment on ice for Bulldogs forward

Alberni Valley Bulldogs went 1-2 over their weekend away with their new roster

On Sunday, Dec. 10, the Alberni Valley Bulldogs were outplayed by the Surrey Eagles, 7-3.

The game had one frightening moment, as new Bulldogs forward Liam Lytton was injured after being hit near the side of the net at the end of the first period. The game was delayed for close to 20 minutes while he stayed down on the ice, and he was taken off the ice on a stretcher by paramedics. Just after 9 p.m. on Sunday, the Bulldogs twitter account announced that Lytton was “stable and well.”

According to head coach Matt Hughes, Lytton was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with whiplash and a concussion. At this point, the severity of the injury and how much time Lytton will miss is unknown.

“It was a bit of a blindside collision,” said Hughes, who described it as Lytton backing into one player who struck from behind while Lytton didn’t know he was coming. “It was just an unfortunate incident.”

The Bulldogs went 1-2 over their weekend away with their new roster, following the moves at the roster deadline.

On Friday, the Bulldogs couldn’t manage to beat the Prince George Spruce Kings, as the Kings came out on top, 4-1. Tyler Vanuden scored the lone Bulldogs goal.

Saturday saw the same score as the night before, 4-1, but this time in favour of the Bulldogs.

The Chilliwack Chiefs opened scoring, but the Bulldogs netted four unanswered goals to take the game.

“I thought the new guys asserted themselves well,” said Hughes. “We’re excited to move ahead.”

Hughes added that the team is hoping to have defenseman Darren Rizzolo back soon, who has missed the past three weeks with injury.
