Celebrating cycling with GoByBike Week in Port Alberni

Community Policing helps cyclists register their bikes for free

GoByBike Week came to an end on Saturday, June 3 with a successful Bike Rave at Blair Park.

GoByBike coordinator John Mayba said this year’s event exceeded all past events, with 100 riders taking to local streets and trails throughout the week.

“I was particularly pleased to see the number of teams that were formed, including a challenge that was issued by cyclists at the ACRD to the city,” said Mayba. “This generated a sense of team spirit and a lot of enthusiasm to get out and ride.”

It is still possible to register rides that were taken last week at www.gobybikebc.ca for a chance to win prizes. Province-wide, more than 55,00 riders logged more than 2 million kilometres in this year’s event.

The bike rave on Saturday taught everyone about bike safety, offering free t-shirts and high-vis bracelets for participants. There were also crafts and a bike obstacle course, as well as a community barbecue.

Community Policing Officer Dave Cusson said he was very pleased to be invited to the event, as it gave him the perfect opportunity tell residents about the Project 529 app, where cyclists can register their bikes to reduce theft. To register your bike for free visit www.project529.com/portalbernircmp or download the 529 app for iOS or Andoid.
