Curling 'funspiel' in Port Alberni lives up to its name

48 curlers, including some beginners, came out to event at Alberni Valley Curling Club

The Alberni Valley Curling Club drew a few new curlers to its doors with a "Funspiel" event earlier this month.

A total of 48 curlers (and some beginners) turned out for the event on Saturday, Jan. 18, which included a game with rotating curlers and rinks, so newcomers had a chance to meet new people and learn more about the sport. After the game, attendees were treated to a hot buffet dinner.

The first place winners were the team of skip Sophie Kuhl (with a score of 24), third Bethany Roosma (with a score of 22), second Louise Robertson (with a score of 25) and lead Ava Wadwell (with a score of 21).

In the participation group were skip Frank Kruks with third Tara Johnson, second Susan Waldie and lead Ted Haggard.

Each of the winners received a prize, as did a group of random door prize winners.

The Learn to Curl and Novice League will start up again at the Alberni Valley Curling Club in the fall. For more information visit the club's website at albernicurling.com.
