Port Alberni athletes bring back medals from BC Summer Games in Maple Ridge

Port Alberni athletes medalled in rugby, wrestling and water sports

Several Port Alberni athletes returned from the BC Summer Games in Maple Ridge with medals.

At this year’s B.C. Summer Games, athletes from the Vancouver Island and Central Coast zone competed in a range of events, from baseball to field lacrosse, and brought home 152 medals (42 gold, 62 silver and 50 bronze).

The five-day competition, which began on July 17 and wrapped up on July 21, saw more medallists from the Vancouver Island/Central Coast zone than in any other region. Competitors are grouped into one of eight zones, depending on where they live.

Fraser River and Vancouver/Coastal zones followed close behind, with 143 and 121 medals, respectively.

For Port Alberni, Jojo Offerein claimed a silver medal with the Zone 6 girls rugby team.

Port Alberni was also well-represented in the Zone 6 team for Towed Water Sports. Brooke Mauke won gold in Girls Wakesurf, silver in Girls Trick and bronze in Girls Wakeboard. Rylee McIntyre won silver in Girls Wakesurf and Girls Wakeboard, while Skyla McIntyre won bronze in Girls Wakesurf.

Zone 6 won silver in mixed dual wrestling and bronze in mixed team wrestling. Port Alberni wrestlers on the team included Holly Coatta, Nolan Cross, Andrei Makofka, Marcus Newton and Seth Romeril.

Coatta also won an individual bronze medal in the Girls 54 kg category, while Makofka won gold in the Boys 74 kg category.
