Despite starting the season with a loss, the Port Alberni Black Sheep Rugby Club has now picked up two wins at home.
The Black Sheep have a 2-1 record after a 66-19 win against the Castaway Wanderers on Saturday, Sept. 28 and a 26-19 win against the University of Victoria on Saturday, Oct. 19.
Despite the winning result on Oct. 19, Black Sheep head coach Jas Purewal says there is still room for improvement.
"We just couldn't get things going," said Purewal. "We wanted to play a tight game because [UVic is] just lightning. There were a lot of opportunities for us to control the game and create some space — we just never took advantage of it."
There were a number of turnovers, including two that resulted in UVic tries, but the Black Sheep's tight five played "really well," said Purewal.
"They carried the day for us," said Purewal. "We played some good defence. [UVic] got their long ones, but we were good in tight."
Tries were scored by Maxx Bodaly, Ryan Turner, Brennan Tourangeau and Misa Vakadranu, while kicker Ty Shannon added three conversions. Purewal says the team is struggling a bit with injuries right now.
"We're really light in the backline," said Purewal. "So a couple of forwards had to help out there and that always makes things tough."
With two wins and one loss at home, Purewal says the team is in a "good position" at the start of the season. The Black Sheep will be back at home on Saturday, Nov. 2 when they host the Cowichan Piggies. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. The Port Alberni Black Sheep Rugby Club is located at the top of Argyle Street.
