The Port Alberni Bombers won their home opener against the Lake Cowichan Kraken in a 9-6 barn burner of a game last weekend.
The Bombers went into the second period on Saturday, Sept. 14 with a 7-1 lead against the visiting Kraken. In the third, the Kraken managed to pull close by scoring five goals in one period, but the Bombers added two more goals of their own on for the 9-6 win.
Multiple Bombers contributed to the score. Jack Barrett had a hat trick, including a shorthanded goal late in the second period. Kash Nicklin and Solstice Tennant scored two goals apiece, while Sean Richards and Nathan Hayes each had one tally. Zach Spafford had three assists and Grayson Salmon also added two helpers. Goaltender Tom Forrest picked up the win in net.
It was a very special win for the Bombers, as the game started with a ceremony to honour their former teammate Bobby McKenzie, who passed away earlier this year. McKenzie's jersey number "3" has been officially retired, the first jersey retirement in franchise history.
With their 4-0 record so far this season, the Bombers are sitting at the top of the VIJHL standings. The Bombers will host the Kraken for a rematch on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at the Alberni Valley Multiplex. Puck drop is at 3 p.m.
