VIJHL: Port Alberni Bombers squeak out close win against Campbell River Storm

Port Alberni Bombers sit in second place in the VIJHL's North Division

A battle between the top two teams in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League's (VIJHL) North Division ended in favour of the Port Alberni Bombers.

The Bombers squeaked out a 3-2 win against the visiting Campbell River Storm on Feb. 12, 2025, despite a rough start for the home team. The Storm managed to open the scoring on their first shot of the game, taking a 1-0 lead to the locker room after 20 minutes. But Leim Smith pulled the Bombers even in the second frame with his 23rd goal of the season.

In the third frame, the Bombers took the lead with two powerplay goals from Zach Spafford and Sean Richards. Although Campbell River manged to score in the final two minutes, the Bombers managed to hold onto their one-goal lead and take the game with a final score of 3-2.

Port Alberni goaltender Evan Grant made 27 saves for the win. The Bombers went two-for-nine on the powerplay, while holding their opponents scoreless during their four attempts on the man advantage.

The Bombers will be back at home on Wednesday, Feb. 19 as the Comox Valley Glacier Kings come to town. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
