Family Day and the Winter Olympics came together on Feb. 11 at Beaver Creek Hall.
Beaver Creek Community Club volunteers were back in form, hosting their second “funraiser,” a day of family-style indoor winter games inspired by the Games underway in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Certainly for the 30-odd kids in attendance the highlight of the day was a mock snowball fight that had them tossing pit-style plastic balls at each other from behind cardboard box walls. Kids will be the beneficiaries of the club’s current project to improve the playground outside on the hall grounds.
The club’s resurgence marks a revival of sorts for Beaver Creek.
“Things slowed down here and almost dissolved for the club about five years ago,” said Sarah Rymer, club vice-president.
Several key members came together to re-energize the club and its rural community. More than 60 kids were part of Halloween Howl, their first event in a long while. A St. Patrick’s dance is coming up March 17.
Club activities also help maintain the hall, which was built in the 1940s and rebuilt in the 1990s. Rymer credited Mike Steinbach, Kirk McGiffin and others for helping with much of the work around the hall.
Volunteers with the Beaver Creek VFD and local search and rescue society were on hand to support the community effort and a $200 emergency kit was raffled, a timely reminder after the recent tsunami evacuation.
