Centennial planning underway in Alberni

Volunteers have started to plan for the city's 100th birthday bash.

A committee of 13 volunteers has begun planning for the City of Port Alberni’s centennial in 2012.

There are five aspects to next year’s celebrations, steering committee chairman Ken Rutherford said: an exhibit at the Alberni Valley Museum; a “then and now” book featuring historic photos; commemorative items such as lapel pins and T-shirts; special events like a three-day homecoming partyAug. 4-6, 2012 and re-enactment of the first Port Alberni council meeting; and participation by community groups.

The committee will receive $50,000 from the city over the next two years and will apply for grant money to hold the centennial celebrations.
