Port Alberni mystery writer to reveal secrets at Word on the Street Vancouver festival
Joan Donaldson-Yarmey is going the distance to reveal a few of her secrets at this year’s Word on the Street festival.
The Port Alberni mystery writer will make the trek from Vancouver Island to Library Square in Vancouver to take part in the “De-Mystifying Mystery Writing” panel discussion at the Vancouver Public Library.
But then, travel is at the core of Donaldson-Yarmey’s mystery writing.
“My novels are combination of mystery and travel since my main character is a travel writer,” said Donaldson-Yarmey.
“I’ll discuss how I come up with ideas as well as how I decide where to have the mystery set.”
Donaldson-Yarmey’s Travelling Detective Series features Edmonton travel writer Elizabeth Oliver. Born in New Westminster and raised in Edmonton, she’s also the author of seven Backroads Series books about Alberta, B.C., Yukon and Alaska published by Lone Pine Publishing in Edmonton.
She’ll be joined on the panel by Elizabeth Elwood, Debra Purdy Kong and Robin Spano during the discussion, which takes place at the Writing Talks Venue, Sept. 25, noon to 1 p.m.
The moderator will be Stephen Miller, actor and the creator of the Pyotr Ryzhkov historical thrillers.
Robin Spano is gambling that the audience will identify with the initial murderous motivation that spawned her series of Clare Vengel Undercover novels. Kong is the author of The Opposite of Dark, first in the Casey Holland transit security mysteries. Elwood is an author and playwright whose mystery books and plays have entertained readers and audiences across Canada.
All four are members of the Crime Writers of Canada, and will be at the CWC table on display from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 25 at Library Square.
They’ll be on hand to sign books, talk more about mystery writing and increase crime awareness.
