The January 2024 Vancouver Island University alum of the month Perry Bulwer will be reading from his book at an upcoming event in Port Alberni.

Attending Vancouver Island University (then Malaspina College) in the early 1990s was a turning point in Perry Bulwer’s life.

He had dropped out of high school in 1972 to join a fundamentalist Christian cult when he was just 16 years old. When he got out 20 years later, he described himself as “intellectually starving.” The Liberal Studies program at VIU helped him overcome his religious indoctrination and take the next steps in his career. After graduating, he went on to become a social activist and lawyer.

Now retired, Bulwer has turned to writing and published his memoir, Misguided: My Jesus Freak Life In A Doomsday Cult, in September 2023. He also continues to advocate for other cult survivors.

Bulwer will be the featured reader at the next Electric Mermaids: Live Reads event at Char’s Landing in Port Alberni this Wednesday, Feb. 28.

With host and emcee Derek Hanebury’s literary guidance, and a host of authors through the open mic, this evening promises to keep poetry and prose fans engaged.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the open mic runs from 6-8 p.m. Admission is $10. See www.charslanding.com/events to pre-register for the readers’ list and to select the optional Zoom link.

Interested readers can buy Bulwer’s book locally at Mobius Books (5016 Argyle St.) or order directly from the publisher at www.newstarbooks.com. It can also be purchased at www.amazon.ca.
