Join banner paint-in
Spring-like weather is approaching, and that means it’s time for the art banner program. Get a group of friends or members of your family or service group together and join the “paint in”.
If you have never painted a banner before, don’t worry, it’s really easy. You don’t even have to be an artist to participate.
The banner material, stand, paint and brushes will be provided at the Community Paint In on May 28–29 and June 4–5. Pick the weekend that suits you best. Drop by the Rollin Art Centre and pick up the registration.
The fee is only $10 per banner.
Try writers’ workshops
Alberni Forest Fest invites new and seasoned writers to participate in Words In The Woods—Port Alberni Writers’ Festival, July 29-31.
Workshops with Jack Hodgins, Brian Brett, Ivan Coyote, Wendy Morton, Nikki Tate and Caroline Woodward will take place July 30, 9 a.m. to noon at North Island College.
Workshop registration fee is $100 and the form is available on the website www.forestfest.ca.
Last chance: unload books
Saturday, April 30 is your last chance to donate gently used books and jigsaw puzzles for the Arts Council’s annual book sale.
Please drop off your donations to the Rollin Art Centre, inside under the staircase in the wooden bin.
We would appreciate if you could check the books for torn pages, mould and mildew, as we cannot sell books in these conditions. Thank you for your support.
New show
for the Rollin
The Rollin Art Centre Gallery will host Landscapes and Light, watercolours by Norm Nicholson and photography by Dave Shankie, from Saturday, April 30 to Wednesday, May 25.
The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meet the artists on Saturday, May 7 from 1–3 p.m. Admission to the gallery is free, and the building is wheelchair accessible.
Studio tour winners
During Days With The Arts many artists had studio prizes to win. Winners of some of these prizes include Brenda Clark (watercolour by Mae LeBlanc), Anna Van Dyk (bowl by Cheryl Hanson), Leila Fischer (oak bowl by Gerry Gagnon), and Bruce Hornidge (dish by Diana Tabler).
Barkley Sounds show May 1
The Village Voices from Qualicum and the Sooke Community Choir will join the Barkley Sounds Community Choir with the concert “Come To The Music” on Sunday, May 1, 2:30 p.m. at the Arrowsmith Baptist Church.
Tickets are $10 and are available at the Rollin Art Centre or from Barkley Sounds choir members.
Craft market opens at quay
Come down to Harbour Quay and support local crafters in a new craft market on Sundays through to October from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The new Sunday market starts May 1. This is in addition to the Saturday farmer’s market.
Festival of choirs returns
The ninth annual Festival of Choirs featuring local churches’ adult and children’s choirs, the Barkley Sounds Choir and Phil’s Harmonics String Orchestra will be performing at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Compton Rd. Friday, May 6 at 7 p.m.
Admission is free of charge, followed by refreshments.
Plants abound at yearly sale
Grab your bags and boxes and join in the fun of the Mt. Klitsa Garden plant sale at the Rollin Art Centre on Saturday, May 7 from 10 a.m. to noon.
Part of the proceeds will go to a horticulture bursary. No earlies, please.
Dancestreams on tour May 7
Dancestreams presents its 25th Anniversary Tour on Saturday, May 7, 7:30 p.m. at the ADSS Auditorium.
Tickets are available at the Rollin Art Centre, Echo Centre, Somass Drugs and at the door.
