What would you like to see in an adventure sport park in the Alberni Valley?
Community Futures Alberni-Clayoquot (CFAC) has put that question to the public with an online survey, after presenting their idea to Port Alberni City Council in February 2023.
The vision, says CFAC’s Reana Miller, is for a regional, all-ages skills development park for skateboarding, mountain biking, BMX and scooter use, located in Port Alberni’s Echo Park. The CFAC has been working with representatives from Riders of the Alberni Valley and Totally Board Surf Company owners in developing the vision.
The conversation started many years ago with skateboard enthusiasts advocating for a new skate park. That has since grown to include other facets of wheeled sports such as mountain bikes, BMX and scooters as well as skateboards. The concept of an adventure sport park has been included in the city’s parks master plan, she said.
The survey has been set up to determine the nature and size of potential user groups, and what they would like to see. There are some open-ended questions for people to voice their thoughts.
“This is by no means a done deal,” Miller stressed. The location is tentative and there is no design plan or price tag yet. She would like to see several hundred responses before appearing again at city council, at a future committee of the whole meeting.
