Hetherington Industries had a humble beginning. Founder and president Peter Hetherington started out 30 years ago by rebuilding batteries in a home based business.

After a few moves they are now located on Roger Street and boast 28 employees who are kept exceedingly busy. Hetherington is also pleased that his two sons, Aaron (Operations Manager) and Corbin (Facility Manager) have joined this family-based business.

The are pleased to be recycling plastic, by chipping plastic containers and are the only facility on Vancouver Island to do so. They have always recycled them but this adds another facet to the business.

Hetherington, after rebuilding and then selling batteries, expanded his business by purchasing Alberni Septic, Valley Septic and Ucluelet Septic. His next move was into the environmental area by recycling oil, oil filters and antifreeze. This has progressed to disposing of plastic oil containers, hazardous waste recycling, and also for the public they can bring in their expired batteries—both automotive and household—for proper disposal.

If you have a spill of hazardous material, Hetherington’s has spill containment products.

Hetherington’s is also the exclusive distributor of Eco-Freez, the first 100% recycled antifreeze in the country to contain bitrex, an element that makes it pet friendly.

Hetherington’s no longer carry batteries but of note they service 90% of the automotive businesses on the Island and collect 85% of waste oil on the Island.

Hetherington’s recently became the only local business to have portable toilets in Port Alberni. Hetherington Industries’ septic and portable toilet division, Alberni Septic , service Port Alberni, Bamfield, the West Coast, Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Courtenay, Campbell River, Nanoose and Nanaimo with toilets to meet all needs and requirements. Special events are their specialty: they can supply special needs toilets, hand wash stations and sanitary hand wash dispensers. Call the office and talk to one of their service representatives for a no-obligation quote.

Hetherington’s is located at 4715 Roger St. and is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. They can be reached by calling 250-724-5112. They also have a toll free number, 1-800-563-6004 for people from out of town. E-mail is and check out their website at
