Alberni courts RCMP traffic service divison

Port Alberni is trying to woo the RCMP into moving its Central Vancouver Island Traffic Service unit to the Valley.

The city is trying to woo the RCMP into moving its Central Vancouver Island Traffic Service unit to Port Alberni.

Mayor John Douglas confirmed the development on Monday.

“We’re lobbying for the traffic detachment at Oceanside to move here,” Douglas said.

There is talk of constructing a new facility for the 10-member unit, which is outgrowing its current digs.

If moved, the unit would still carry out its duties on Highway 4 and be available to the Port Alberni detachment as needed, Douglas added.

No specific discussions have been had about the matter. But city staff continue to make inquiries and hope to advance it to the point where the department can be built into the 2013 budget.
