Police are waiting for answers from the BC Coroner's Service about the death of a 23-year old woman from Port Alberni.

Port Alberni RCMP responded with BC Ambulance to a call at a residence on Oct. 21 at 9 a.m. where there was a woman in medical distress, Const. Shelly Schedewitz said. The woman was taken to West Coast General Hosptial where she died three days later.

The woman's name is being withheld by police at this time, Schedewitz said.

The death is out of the ordinary given the woman's age and untimeliness of her death, RCMP said in a press release. Investigators are working with the coroner's service to determine a cause.

Witnesses have told the News that the woman was seen at a large outdoor party held at the abandoned tire plant near the Alberni landfill on Saturday night.

Shedewitz would only say the woman was reported to have been seen at a social gathering that night. “But she was seen at other places in the community that evening,” Shedewitz added.

The incident is not connected to a fire at the tire plant Wednesday afternoon, Schedewitz said.

Police are appealing to the public for information to help piece together the hours leading up to the woman's death.

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call police at 723-2424, or to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at  1-800-222-TIPS.
