A long crack in a Burde Street water main had city of Port Alberni waterworks crews knee deep in cold, dirty water for 11 hours on Monday.
“It’s a long narrow crack in a cast iron main,” said water systems chargehand Amar Giri.
“It’s bad.”
The several foot long crack flooded a section of the the top end of Burde Street and cut off water for several residents a little after 8 a.m. on Sept. 27.
The crack was unusual, Giri added, because it went lengthwise rather than width-wise.
The cracked water main was replaced with a plastic one and the road has been filled in. It will be repaved later this year, said Giri.
