Sproat Lake Fire Dept. holds open house

Check out what volunteer firefighting has to offer on July 28

The Sproat Lake Volunteer Fire Department is holding its annual open house on Saturday, July 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Meet the firefighters, watch demos and learn about fire safety.

At the beginning of June firefighters did a door-to-door campaign in the Sproat Lake area in an attempt to recruit new members and spread the word about fire safety in advance of fire season. The SLVFD has done recruitment drives in the past, but not for a couple of years, said firefighter Cam Appleton.

“This is something that is new for us too.”

“Right now we have about 40 members and they range in age from 18 years old to…75,” he said. “Right now we have three fire halls and we’re looking to have at least 20 members at each fire hall. So we would need to get another five or 10 members, ideally, per firehall.”

They have a new training program where they meet with new recruits every second Friday night and Saturdays. “After they complete six months of training they’ll have a good idea of what they’re doing, and they’ll be able to come out to Tuesday night practice.

The open house will give people an idea of what the volunteer firefighting force does in and around Sproat Lake. It will take place at the Harold Bishop Fire Hall, 7667 Pacific Rim Highway.
