The Sproat Lake Marine Patrol completed another successful summer at the lake this year, according to leadhand Madison Redman. The marine patrol is an Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District funded program which sends four students to patrol the lake and help out its users.
“This year we got a new boat, it’s an old search and rescue boat. It’s much better and it has a lot more space so all four of us can go out more comfortably,” said Redman.
Lake usage mirrored the weather.
“During July we had a quiet month as the weather wasn’t too nice. We really saw a decline in the number of people who were going out for the day boating,” said patrol member Ross Johnson.
“Our busiest weekend was Aug. 13-14.”
Lots of launches made for a hectic weekend for the foursome, who clean the boat launch, loan out life jackets and do pleasure craft courtesy checks.
“We had 45 done this year but a lot of people had already had it done last year,” said Johnson
“We also provided 15 jump starts for boats that had dead batteries.”
