Port Alberni will host its first-ever Walk for Memories, raising awareness of Alzheimer Disease and dementia, on Sunday, Jan. 30 at Blair Park.

Registration is at 10 a.m. and the walk begins at 11 a.m.

The walk is in honour of Marg Souther, facilitator with the Port Alberni Alzheimer support and information group. “Every walk (in B.C.) has an honouree,” event organizer Barb Witte said. “Marg does so much work with the support group.”

Witte first learned about the Walk for Memories when she was perusing a website for the Alzheimer Society of BC after her father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, a form of dementia or degenerative neurological disease. She organized the run to bring more awareness to the disease.

“We know about cancer; we know about MS. With Alzheimer’s, people just don’t know about it,” she said. “I think we’re starting to realize how more and more people are being diagnosed.”

A four-kilometre walk or a seven-kilometre run around Kitsuksis Dike are on tap says Witte, who belongs to the running club.

To register for the Port Alberni Walk for Memories, please call Witte at .... or the Alzheimer Society of B.C. at ...., or go online to www.walkformemories.com. Register in person at 10 a.m. the day of the walk.
