Herb, the youngest of eight children, was born at home on the family farm in Bowsman, Manitoba.
A hard worker all his life, he left school at the age of 14 to run the family farm when his brothers enlisted in the army at the start of WW2. After the war Herb worked various jobs across Canada ending up in Port Alberni, where he found employment at the Somass Mill, working as a lumber grader until retirement.
In 1960, he and his wife Doris, bought a farm on the Somass River where they raised their family of four daughters.
Herb embraced life. He planned family trips and camping. He loved his dogs and horses. He volunteered building the Log Train Trail, was an active member of the Beaufort Gang and participated in numerous Kamloops Cattle Drives. He and Doris travelled extensively together after retirement. His was a familiar face at Alberni Bulldog hockey games, where he knew all the players names, and cheered them on with his favourite coffee mug in hand. Keeping active, he enjoyed the dike numerous times a week with friends.
We loved our dad, grandpa and great grandpa. He was the best. His passing has left a huge void in our lives. We will miss him forever.
Predeceased by his wife Doris of 66 years, parents and siblings.
He leaves behind Daughters, Donna (Jerry), Sheila (Glen), Cary (Paul), Lorna (Kevin). Grandchildren, Jennifer (Dave), Drew, Blair (Jason), Evan (Rhea), Brandon, Alexandra, Chloe, Thaney and Hayden. Great granddaughter Pearl, and numerous nieces and nephews.
We his family, would especially like to thank Mark and Rachel Theus for all the love, kindness and help they gave dad. We would also like to extend our appreciation to Dr. Williams and the nursing staff of West Coast General Hospital for the excellent care dad received while there.
