In Loving Memory ~
Jo was the second child of Caroline Marie Switzer and Walter Allen. Born in Port Alberni, Jo was raised in Cherry Creek, where she grew up walking a mile to school. She enjoyed swimming in the creeks and participated in the local Brownies and Guides. Jo became one of the first Gold Cord Guides in Port Alberni receiving this honour at Government House in Victoria.
After high school, Jo trained as a registered nurse at Royal Jubilee Hospital and graduated in 1968. She worked one year at WCGH and then boarded an ocean liner, sailing off to Australia where she had great adventures, made lifelong friends, and connected with Australian relatives. While there, she met her husband Reg in Perth. They married in Canada in 1973 and settled in Port Alberni.
Jo and Reg were among the early members of the Port Alberni Yacht Club. Together they enjoyed cruising the coastline, motorcycling to Mexico on the Gold Wing, travelling the world, and camping on Hornby Island.
She was a very caring and compassionate nurse, working at WCGH for most of her career. After earning her BScN at UVic in 2001, Jo worked in Palliative and Community Care.
Jo was a nurse at work and at home to her husband. She was a great listener to everyone, and never complained or burdened others with her own worries. She loved gardening and knew the Latin name for every plant in her garden and beyond.
Jo is survived and dearly missed by her loving family.
The family would like to thank Dr. Freddie Meyer, the Palliative Care team, and the staff at Ty Watson House for their compassionate care. We would also like to thank her caring friends who visited and supported Jo and her family so lovingly in her last days.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jo's memory to Ty Watson House, Cancer, or Parkinson's Research.
Please join us at Cherry Creek Hall on Sunday, June 18th from 1:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. as we raise a cup of tea to celebrate Jo-Marie's life.
