In loving memory ~
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Wanda Ilia McLean nee Kirkpatrick on January 16, 2024 at the age of 86. Predeceased by her parents Thomas and Ilia Kirkpatrick, her husband of 64 years, Ross McLean and daughter Carol, she is survived by sons Lawrence (Karen), Gary (Lisa) and grandsons James and Evan. She will be missed by her siblings, sisters Erma, Sharon (Paul), Arlene (Frank), Valerie and brother Tom, as well as by many nieces and nephews, numerous friends and acquaintances.
Wanda was born in Stewart B.C. in 1937 and had many fond and happy memories of growing up in a northern mining town. She left Stewart in January 1956 for Port Alberni. On the day she left her father gave her a lucky rabbit's foot, which Wanda kept and treasured for the rest of her life. Wanda started work that year at Alberni Plywoods, as one of the "plywood girls" of that era. While there, she met a pipe- fitter named Ross McLean and they married in 1958.
Becoming a mother and homemaker, she never lost her strong interest in all forms of arts and crafts, ceramics being one of her favourites. Volunteering at the ceramic's workshops at Echo Center, she received her 25 year pin from the Sunshine Club for her dedication. Camping was always one of Wanda's favourite get aways, going all over the Island and all points north. Going to Dawson City, Yukon with her parents was a special camping memory. Moving from Sproat Lake in 2006 to Cherry Creek, Wanda spent the last years supporting Ross in all his endeavours and indulging her family with all their favourite meals and goodies. Family always came first for Wanda. Many mornings, she and Ross could be found down at the river drinking coffee and watching the boats come and go.
