Mr. Pley - thanks for your bravery

To the Editor,

I was heartened to read your article Lost for Words: Alberni businessman speaks about overcoming stuttering (cover story, March 4) and how Alberni businessman Jason Pley is so open about his stuttering.

During my youth in the 1960s and early 1970s, I read no positive articles about stuttering like this one. I salute Mr. Pley because his openness will serve to help others struggling with this speech problem, especially younger people.

I just want to mention to your readers that a great resource is the website of the Stuttering Foundation (www.stutteringhelp.org). It is a wealth of information and offers many free resources such as streaming videos and downloadable brochures.

Their toll-free helpline in Canada is 1-800-992-9392.

I hope that the residual effect of the movie The King’s Speech is that this new interest in stuttering continues well into the future so that people who stutter will better know their options about seeking help.
