Alberni Gymnasts busy at provincials

The Port Alberni Gymnastics Academy (PAGA) athletes had a successful turn at the provincial and high school championships this month.

On March 7 Blair Sutton competed for ADSS at BC High School Gymnastics Championships in Nanaimo. She won the all around title for finishing third on vault, first on bars, 10th on beam and second on floor.

Three PAGA gymnasts qualified for the provincials in Kamloops last weekend: Abigail Anderson (Level 3 Novice), Haven Gus (Level 3 Tyro) and Kylah MacKenzie (Level 2 Novice).

MacKenzie was third on bars, fourth on beam and 10th all around. Gus was seventh on bars, eighth on beam, second on floor and eighth all around.

Anderson finished fifth on vault, seventh on bars, second on beam and fifth all around.

The academy prepares to host gymnasts from Abashiri, Port Alberni’s sister city in Japan this week. Japanese athletes arrived Tuesday night and were to practice as well as tour the city, PAGA spokesperson Paula Flemming said.
