Fred and Joyce Luecke of Port Alberni returned home from the BC Seniors Games in Castlegar last week with gold medals around their necks.
The Lueckes beat a team from Duncan in pairs carpet bowling (men and women 55-plus) to earn their second-ever gold medal at the BC Seniors Games.
The game was a close one from the outset, Joyce Luecke said. “We were tied in the seventh end and we one it in the eighth. We were tied with that team from Duncan all the way through.”
What made their victory even more sweet, she said, is this particular team from Duncan won gold medals in the same event at least year’s games in Campbell River.
The Lueckes carpet bowl out of Echo Centre, where they are members of the Sunshine Club Seniors. A fours team attended the Seniors Games for the first time this year and finished fourth.
Other Port Alberni seniors earning medals at the BC Seniors Games were:
Frank Sheare, silver, golf (men 60–64, gross score, 20.0 handicap); Keith Gauthier, bronze, golf (men 60–64, gross score, 20.0 handicap); Frank Hastings, bronze, golf (men 70–74, net score, 20.0 handicap); Patsy Gauthier, silver, golf (women 55–59, net score, 0–24.3 handicap); Barbara Sheare, gold, golf (women 60–64, net score, 0–24.3 handicap); Carol Hastings, gold, golf (women 65–69, gross score, 24.4–40 handicap); Shirley Goodman, silver, golf (women 70–74, net score, 24.4–40 handicap); Ann Cullen, bronze, track and field (women 60–64, 400 metres).
In team events, Jim’s Clothes Closet senior men’s Slo-Pitch team won bronze in men 60–64 and the Zone 2 soccer team, including some Port Alberni players, earned silver in the men 55-plus category.
