The name was in the game for lady golfers at Alberni Golf Club this week.
The names? Mutt and Jeff. That’s right, for a “Mutt” score you total your net score on all par 3s. The “Jeff” score is the total of your net score on all the par 5s. Several names became outstanding in their field, such as Gayle Rhodes, Katie Cyr, Carol Bouchard and Pat Wright, who had a four-way tie for their “Mutt” score.
Leona Fowler became the “Jeff” scorer, carding a 12, with Carol Bouchard right behind her with a 13.
B-Jay Harper’s name was mentioned along with Patsy Gauthier as Harper held the Challenge Pin and was contested by Gauthier.
Harpery put up a good match right down to the last putt on the last hole but Gauthier beat her out by one stroke.
The new Ringer Board has just been posted. Names to note for the handicappers between 19 and 21 on the completed one are Leona Fowler, winning three balls; Pat Nicklin pocketing two balls; and Sharon Haggard going home with one ball.
For the higher handicappers between 28 and 33 we find Shirley Goodman with three balls; Gayle Rhodes with two; Sandra Simpson with one—which should make up for a few of the lost ones!
Low gross score for the day was Janice Cross with an 89; no surprise as to the low net scorer, that was Patsy Gauthier with her 72 after a great game on all fronts.
Teams for the four-ball best ball qualifying round to be played at Pheasant Glen on Aug. 12 were “namely” Kathy White with Janice Cross; Leona Fowler with Patsy Gauthier; Teresa Cutting with Shannon Haggard; Linda Christian with Pat Nicklin; Olga Kanigan with Gayle Rhodes; and finally, Anna Marie Krikke with Carol Bouchard.

After all this name dropping we’ll only tell you that Alberni’s “B” Team beat out Mt. Benton team by 41.5 versus 30.5 at their last match of the year this week.
“C” Team will play their last match on July 28 at Pheasant Glen.
The Zone 6 Net Tournament will be held in Comox soon. You can apply on line if your course index is over 18.
Nine-Hole Division
“A” Division— There are a few names being tossed around in this division as well. Kathy Toms was the low net winner with Marta Williamson scoring the low gross winning score. Katy Lekich scooped the coins in the putting jar.
“B” Division— Names of note are Marilyn Nyhuus taking low net with Trish Watson coming in with the low gross. Lorraine Wilson was the happy recipient of the proceeds of the putting jar.
These divisions recently attended the Nanaimo Interclub on July 7. Penny Churchill’s name came to the front with her low gross and low net score while Nancy Clayton brought home the honours for the least amount of putts.
Hmmm...weren’t Mutt and Jeff in the comics?
