Port Alberni is being treated to some top calibre high school girls basketball this weekend at the ADSS gym.

It's movie night in the Dog Pound this week as the Alberni Valley Bulldogs settle in with game tapes from their contests with Langley Chiefs. The Bulldogs face the Chiefs in the first round of the B.C. Hockey League Fred Page Cup playoffs, beginning this Friday, Feb. 25 at the Langley Events Centre.

The Alberni Valley Midget A Bulldogs beat Peninsula Eagles 4-3 in sudden death overtime on Sunday, Feb. 20 to earn a spot in the Vancouver Island Tier 2 hockey championship starting Feb. 27.

Port Alberni City Council has thrown their support behind the Homiss Wolves' bid to host the annual Junior All Native Basketball Tournament in 2012. Games would take place at the new Alberni Athletic Hall.

The Alberni District Secondary School Armada senior girls' basketball team defeated GP Vanier at the North Islands in Nanaimo last weekend to earn a berth in the Island championships Feb. 24-26 in Port Alberni.

Their goal was to make the AAA Island basketball championships and the Armada senior girls' made it.

Alberni Valley wrestlers dominated at the Vancouver Island Secondary Schools Wrestling Championships in Port Hardy on the weekend. The Alberni District Secondary School boys team won the Island title for a record 24th time in the past 28 years while the ADSS girls team was second overall, edged out of first place by Nanaimo’s Dover Secondary.

The Van Isle Ford Midget Bulldogs locked up first place in the North Island division of their playoff series by defeating the Tyees 5-3 on Feb. 12 in Campbell River.

Port Alberni figure skater Johanna Hamblin earned gold with her performance at the Special Olympics Winter Championships in Coquitlam.
